Transform Lives and Communities
When the poor are aware of the dangers around them, they can better protect their families from violence. We train vulnerable communities on the lies that criminals use to trap them, and with this knowledge, they can stay safe for years to come.
Being thrown in prison can have devastating social effects on people who are falsely accused of crimes, as well as their families. In Kenya, local congregations “adopt” IJM clients who have been victims of police abuse of power. Church members build strong relationships with people in jail, walking with them throughout their trial and supporting them as they reintegrate into their communities.
For one IJM client, Kevin, the church was instrumental in winning his freedom and helping him build a future for his family. Kevin was an orphan who had grown up in a children’s home with no contact with his extended family. When he was thrown in prison on a false charge, IJM took on his case and he was adopted by Deliverance Church.
Church members visited Kevin in prison, provided for his basic needs and visited his wife. They helped him find a job, and even paid his bail. One of the elders, Mama Abigail, was a constant advocate for Kevin, and became like a mother to him. With the support of IJM, she tracked down Kevin’s extended family and helped him find crucial government documents.
