“On the day of rescue, I felt relieved, overjoyed and determined. It was too emotional for me to describe in words.”
–Chithra

Growing up, Chithra never knew what freedom looked like. At only 2 years old, she had an impossible debt to pay. When her family took out an $87 loan from an agricultural farm owner, the owner used it to trap her entire family in 20 years of slavery.

At 7 years old, she worked every day sunup to sundown alongside the adults, bundling large amounts of sugarcane, watering and weeding plants, chopping down trees and baking bricks.

She was tired, her skin sore, scraped and splintered. But the slave owner was ruthless. He gave her only enough thin rice porridge to survive. He abused her physically, psychologically and emotionally; beating her with fists, feet and objects while spewing threats that haunted Chithra’s dreams.

Each special moment in Chithra’s life—childhood, marriage and motherhood—were spent trapped on the farm under the slave owner’s watchful eye. When she delivered her beautiful baby boy, Raja, she worried he was destined for the same life of slavery.

Thankfully, he wasn’t. Chithra and every single slave on the farm was freed because our IJM teams had exactly what they needed to bring them to safety and freedom. By funding a rescue operation, you can help us investigate cases and free families just like Chithra’s too.

“On the day of rescue, I felt relieved, overjoyed and determined. It was too emotional for me to describe in words.”

Chithra and her family are still thriving long after rescue with all the essentials to start their new lives in freedom. Today, she enjoys cooking for her family in her own home and dreaming about the future her son can have now that they’re free.
